Often, the office website establishes the first impression our offices. On many campuses, it is the only place where disability is mentioned. It may provide a way for visitors to the site to determine how disability is viewed on the campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Current Practice?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many websites focus primarily on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ticss-98a3a1ba wp-block-list\"><li>Compliance with laws<\/li><li>Policies of the disability services office<\/li><li>Roles and responsibilities of disabled students<\/li><li>Service delivery procedures including eligibility criteria and documentation guidelines<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traditional Examples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background ticss-b593d0ff\" style=\"background-color:#c4e5f3\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In exploring websites, below are a few examples we found (emphasis ours):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ticss-5f9649e8 wp-block-list\"><li>Students interested in the academic and auxiliary services available (<strong>as mandated<\/strong> in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990) should make an appointment&#8230;<\/li><li>It is not possible for the staff to anticipate all of a student\u2019s <strong>unique and special needs<\/strong> during their college experience.<\/li><li>The college is committed to meeting the needs of all students who meet the criteria for <strong>special assistance<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Because of the<strong> complexities of disabilities<\/strong>, &#8220;reasonable accommodation&#8221; will be determined on an individual basis by the staff in consultation with the student and faculty and\/or staff member. <\/li><li>An undue hardship refers to any accommodation that would be <strong>unduly costly, expensive,<\/strong> substantially disruptive, or that would fundamentally alter the nature of the program.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We encourage you to explore various websites of disability resource offices and see what you find. Our own search revealed a mix in terms of how disability and the role of the office is represented. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Explore your own website to see what the messages are. You may want to use a word cloud generator or word counter that you can find online, paste text from your website into it and see what words are most common.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image ticss-10a405e0\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.exploreaccess.org\/refocus2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-29-at-11.04.28-PM.png\" alt=\"Word cloud with needs, help, special and assist being largest and services accommodations, eligible, qualified, ADA, disabilities and compliance being smaller\" class=\"wp-image-494\" width=\"300\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.exploreaccess.org\/refocus2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-29-at-11.04.28-PM.png 600w, https:\/\/www.exploreaccess.org\/refocus2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-29-at-11.04.28-PM-300x291.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the implicit messages?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ticss-74b1c5bd wp-block-list\"><li>A focus on what is &#8220;mandated&#8221; implies that efforts to create access are to avoid legal complaints.<\/li><li>Disabled people are required to provide proof of their right to accommodation.<\/li><li>Disabled people are unable to achieve without assistance.<\/li><li>Disability is hard and requires good will and charity.<\/li><li>Disabled students are needy, different, and expensive. And if the accommodation you are requesting is expensive, it likely will be denied.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How might this be different?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Disability resource offices design web sites that are accessible and useable, represent disability as an aspect of diversity, promote access as a matter of social justice, and recognize the importance of inclusive design in all environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Refocused Examples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background ticss-5ac59de2\" style=\"background-color:#c4e5f3\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"ticss-65141ac9 wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/drc\/\"><strong>Disability Resource Center at Purdue University<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdx.edu\/drc\/\"><strong>Disability Resource Center at Portland State University<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/drc.arizona.edu\"><strong>Disability Resource Center at the University of Arizona<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/sas.sdes.ucf.edu\"><strong>Student Accessibility Services at University of Central Florida<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the potential impact of this change?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ticss-5b80f354 wp-block-list\"><li>The office is presented as a resource to all members of the campus community.<\/li><li>Disability is welcomed and appreciated.<\/li><li>The problem and the solution belong to the entire campus community.<\/li><li>The disability resource office is seen as having a leadership role in creating inclusive campus communities.<\/li><li>The campus commitment is not simply a reaction to legal requirements but a part of a larger institutional commitment to diversity, social justice and equity.<\/li><li>The focus is placed on poor designs which cause barriers for students.
